How to install OpenGEU 8.04.1 from packages
From OpenGeuWiki
Finally OpenGEU 8.04.1 Luna Crescente has been released and you can Download it now. This is a very important day for our team and project, this release is a milestone indeed. In the latest OpenGEU you’ll find a lot of new code, this is the first release in which we actually manage to develop something more complex than simple bash scripting, custom configurations and implementations :)
OpenGEU 8.04 has been released late compared to Ubuntu but nothing comes for nothing. In this time we developed a lot of new tools and enlightenment module, we just wanted to deliver you a complete OS, not something too much similar to a work in progress. We have a lot of new things in development already, naturally, but we’ll show you what’s yet to come in the next release, Quarto di Luna (which will be based on Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex). So, compared to the old OpenGEU Luna Nuova, we have a lot of news of enhancements for you to enjoy:
- First of all, naturally, the new OpenGEU Themes Manager (geutheme), an incredible tool able of changing for you every part of the desktop with a mouse click; with the new theme manager, there you’ll find a big number of new themes in our repos for you to choose and install, but that’s not all: the themes manager is able to fetch new themes from the net or from a CD for you! With Geutheme you’ll also be able of customizing every little part of your desktop, create new OpenGEU themes, pack them and share them with your friends! You’ll also find the Desktop Effects manager, enabling for the E17 desktop fantastic bidimensional composite effects able of astonishing your friends even if you have a very old computer (even a Pentium I) or a Virtual Machine!
- Two full featured and complete new OpenGEU themes, specially designed for Luna Crescente, using the Murrine GTK engine, a beaty and very very fast GTK engine! So you’ll experiment new ver cool themes, way faster than those from Luna Nuova (installable from repos if you liked them) for your eyes and CPU cycles to enjoy :)
- OpenGEU’s not using gnome-settings-manager anymore, so the system is way lighter and we are already developing our own very fast and light daemon :)
- eTray, a new system tray based on trayer directly developed by Quaker of our team! With eTray you’ll finally have a fully customizable and eye-candy friendly system tray for your Enlightenment desktop :)
- A lot of new modules developed by Dave and Hannes J. from our team, like Extramenu, Trash bin (untill now there was no Trash at all in the E17 Desktop Shell :D ), and more!
- The latest E17 Desktop Shell available, compiled directly by our team with our own new repositories!
- A lot of new E17 Modules (like Gadman, OSX like Gadgets for your Enlightenment Desktop) and a big number of experimental E17 applications compiled for you, available online in our repos ;)
- The Live CD contains now even more software, more tools (and it’s therefore a fantastic system to be used even without an internet connection), out-of-the-box support for Flash movies (thanks to Gnash) and even more support for Network connections and proprietary codecs, thanks to Totem Media Player, able of automatically fetching codes for you ;)
- Lighter Gnome applications for your system to run even faster, like Claws-Mail and the Mirage pictures previewer!
There’s so much more to say on this release and I’m sure I’m forgetting something but for now I’d just like to thank my all team for having made this release possible and every user for supporting us in the forums and everywhere else! Download and enjoy OpenGEU now, you’ll judge our work with your own experience! :)
A lot of work has yet to be done to achieve our goal: a completely user friendly E17 desktop. But Luna Crescente is a very important step in this direction, the new OpenGEU is incredibly evolved compared to Luna Nuova. So, if you loved Luna Nuova, you're gonna get crazy for Luna Crescente! ;)
The OpenGEU Luna Crescente deb packages can be installed on any Ubuntu based system [Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu eee (yes, OpenGEU from packages works perfectly on your EeePC if installed in an already working Ubuntu or Xubuntu eee version: we now also have a dedicate OpenGeeeU release for the Asus EeePC), etcetera]. You can install OpenGEU on any Ubuntu based system easily. If you already have the Alpha version of Luna Crescente installed, don't read this instructions but read this guide instead.

[edit] Setting up the repositories
Important Note: You can use these repos to upgrade from an already installed OpenGEU 7.10 Luna Nuova system to the new OpenGEU 8.04 Luna Crescente. If this is the case, just open your sources.list file and change any "gutsy" entry with "hardy" without quotes. Find sources.list in
/etc/apt/sources.list
To be able to change that file you'll have to use a file manager as root. To do it, for example, you can open a terminal and run:
gksu thunar
If you use GNOME, you can run Nautilus instead, always with the gksu command. If you prefer, you can directly open the sources.list file from the terminal with the following command:
gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Again, instead than gedit you can use kate or mousepad or any other text editor you may prefer. You can change gutsy to hardy from synaptic too, naturally. At this point just update and then upgrade, from terminal:
sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude upgrade
Also, remember not to shut down or restart your machine during the installation!
[edit] Getting Started
If you are installing OpenGEU Luna Crescente Final version on any *Ubuntu based system, you can simply go straight forward with these instructions. Should you be upgrading from Prima Luna or Luna Nuova, you may experience this problem, in that case, and only in that case, follow these instructions after the installation process.
Entrance is not installed by default anymore. If you want to try Entrance (I suggest you to do so) just search for the opengeu-entrance-themes package and install that too. If you do so, the installation will freeze and you'll be asked to choose your default Display Manager: Entrance or GDM. The choice is yours, to know more about this matters, please read the GDM VS Entrance page. What's important for the OpenGEU Installation is just that you remember to make a choice: if you don't, your installation won't proceed correctly.
The first step now is to download and install the repo key. With this key you will always know that our packages are trusted by Synaptic. Remember that this is an important passage, do it! Just open up a terminal and run the following command, than you can proceed with the procedure.
wget -q http://opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu/dists/repo.key -O - | sudo apt-key add -
If it does not work try
sudo wget --output-document=FILE http://opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu/dists/repo.key sudo apt-key add FILE
Also, remember not to shut down or restart your machine during the installation!
[edit] Using Synaptic (or Adept in KDE)
you'll just have to move to the menu option: Settings --> Packages repositories (or just repositories). Now you'll have to move to the "Third Party software" tab. Now click on the "+Add" button and copy / paste the following deb line in the newly opened window:deb http://opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu hardy e17
Remember, the entire line has to be pasted, not only the simple link. Now click on the "+Add Source button." Do it again with the following line too:
deb http://opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu hardy opengeuSynaptic will warn you that the repos have changed and the system has to be updated each time you'll add a deb line. Now you can click on the update button; click on the Mark all updates button and then on apply. After the update has been completed, you'll just have to click on the search button and search for opengeu. Double click on opengeu-desktop, this will mark it and all of its dependencies for install (remember that if you want entrance, you'll have to search for opengeu-entrance-themes and mark it for installation too)! Confirm what you're doing in the newly opened window, click on the Apply button and the installation will begin! Now have a cup of coffee and when the installation will be completed, move to the "Final Configurations" Chapter on this page.</p>
[edit] Using a normal Terminal Emulator
Keep your terminal opened and enter the following commands, press enter for each command of course.
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Instead of gedit, write kate if you use KDE or mousepad if you use Xfce. If you want to modify the file from terminal, then write nano instead of gedit.
In the text editor, reach the end of the file and add the following text:
## OpenGEU deb http://opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu hardy e17 deb http://opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu hardy opengeu
Be sure to leave an empty line at the end of the text file, save it and close the text editor you've been using. Now, from the terminal, enter the following commands:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install opengeu-desktop
Agree to any request from aptitude and in a few minutes the OpenGEU system will be installed. Now have a cup of coffee and when the installation will be completed, move to the "Final Configurations" Chapter on this page.
[edit] Final Configurations
In order to complete our OpenGEU installation, we now have to click on the menu entry: Configuration-->Configuration Panel-->System-->OpenGEU Default Configuration: you'll be asked to enter the system password. At this point, if you where on Enlightenment, the system will ask you to log out, do it. If you where in another Sessions, just Log out manually. When you'll be on the login page again, remember that you now have the option, clicking on the Sessions button, to choose Enlightenment. This will start an OpenGEU session.
[edit]
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:
Remember to only run OpenGEU-configuration once for each user booting OpenGEU! If you run it again, any configuration you did to Enlightenment will be lost and E17 will return to the standard and initial OpenGEU configuration. This tool can also be used if you messed things up in E17 and don't know how to revert to a safe configuration: in this case, just run OpenGEU-configuration from any session, even from Gnome or KDE. Then you'll be able to log to E17 again with the default configurations.
